India launched its first Sun mission ‘Aditya L-1’ on 2 September 2023. Aditya L1 will reach the Lagrangian point after about 125 days. It will be placed in halo orbit near the Sun-Earth system. Encouraged by the success of Chandrayaan-3, ISRO launched its first solar mission, India launched its first solar mission ‘Aditya L-1’ on 2 September 2023. In the year 2019, the Center had sanctioned an amount equivalent to approximately $46 million for the Aditya-L1 mission. ISRO has not given any official update on the cost.

1. What is Aditya L-1 after all?


Aditya L-1 is a scientific space craft. It is a space observatory which is equipped with space telescope and other instruments. It will carry out studies related to the Sun 24x7. Aditya L-1 will be launched by PSLV rocket.

2. Is it a satellite, which will revolve around the Earth?


No, it will not revolve around the Earth. It will remain stable at a point 1.5 million km away from the Earth on the straight line between the Earth and the Sun, which is called the Lagrangian-1 point. Aditya L1 is ISRO's 5th mission to go out of Earth's orbit.

3. How many scientific payloads are being sent with the Aditya L-1 mission?


Aditya L1 mission will carry seven scientific payloads (instruments). The payload of Aditya L1 mission spacecraft will study the photosphere, chromosphere and outermost layers of the Sun (CORONA).

4. In which orbit will Aditya L-1 spacecraft be installed?


The objective of the Aditya L1 mission is to study the outer atmosphere of the Sun. Aditya L1 will be placed in a halo orbit near the Lagrangian point (L1) of the Sun-Earth system.

5. How much time will the Aditya L-1 spacecraft take to reach the Lagrangian (L1) point?


Aditya-L1 spacecraft will be launched by ISRO's PSLV rocket from Satish Dhawan Space Center Sriharikota. First it will be installed in low Earth orbit (LEO). From where it will be boosted to establish itself in the Lagrangian (L1) point of the Earth-Sun system. It will take approximately four months to reach the Lagrangian (L1) point of this mission.

6. What is the cost of Aditya-L1 mission?

7. What is Lagrangian (L1) point?


The Lagrangian (L1) point is the space between any two celestial bodies (such as Earth-Sun or Earth-Moon). Any object placed at a Lagrangian (L1) point will remain stable because it will be subject to drag equally from both bodies. There can be many such Lagrangian points between any two bodies. For example, there are five such points between the Earth and the Sun.

8. How will Aditya-L1 study the Sun?


To know about any object in space from a distance, it is necessary to have some kind of communication with the object. 10. Will these instruments not melt due to the heat of the sun?


The Lagrangian (L1) point is 'just' 1.5 million km from Earth in the Sun's direction, which is 1 percent of the average distance between Earth and the Sun. Of course, the temperature at the Lagrangian point will be higher but will be much lower than the temperature of a few thousands or millions. Moreover, these devices have been designed with such capacity that they will not melt.

11. What is the objective of Aditya L1 mission?


Aditya L1 mission will study solar activities. The spacecraft's payloads will study the photosphere, chromosphere and outermost layers of the Sun (corona).
